Actually, I still think it is a good idea.

Mark the underside. Drill holes at the corners.
We used a hole saw for the larger radius corners and a 3/4" bit for the small corners. (I would recommend 1" to anyone trying it as the trim was tough to get around the small radius and look right.)
Flip it over and draw guidelines between the holes.
Use an air rotary cutter and abrasive wheel to cut the material.
Add some door edge trim and it looks pretty good.
